That's not possible on a device other than the iPhone 3GS or fourth generation iPod touch.

Huh? I'm also on 5.1.1 on an iPhone 4. I plan on upgrading tomorrow to IOS 6, why can't I?

Because, for your model iPhone, only iOS 7.0.2 is signed by Apple. If you attempt to upgrade or restore, that's what will be installed on your phone. Same with the OP.

I'm going to ignore any of the custom firmware options solutions for now. So you are saying I can't even

just use shift + restore and choose an older firmware in iTunes?

if thats the case then this is going to be a bit more complicated :(

No. You can only update to the current version.

If you are useing a Ipad 3 yes you can!!! BUT YOU HAVE TO DO IT THROUGH ITUNES FIRST!!! I have done this for a few people in the last couple of weeks!!! Between Ipads and Iphones None of these people ever connected to Iunes on their systems I O S devices that could be upgraded had to be done through Itunes before Devices that that I O S 6 had the option of updateing trough the device. LOL (Ipad 1 can only go up to IOS5.1.1) So hope you all understand my RAMBLINGS USE ITUNES and if possible you will be able!!! PS Once your system is upgraded to IOS 6 You can update to what ever is possible through the device!

Go to your settings

Click on general

The second option down it should say system update

Click on it

You then have the option to learn more

The second option says download and install

Click on it

Remember you must be connected to wifi
