USA to UK iMessages cost?

I just bought my first iPhone and I will be primarily be texting/facetiming in a different country (USA to UK). How much will it cost to send iMessages? I have a limited data plan and use AT&T if that matters. Also, I've read some posts but I'm still not sure about the difference between iMessages and SMS?

iMessages are free. The data they use comes out of your data plan, unless you are connected to WiFi.

iMessages are Apple to Apple only (iPhone to iPhone, iPad or Mac). They will have a blue "bubble" in the Messages app.

You may have to be on WiFi to use Facetime, as your carrier must permit it over cellular data.

SMS, or text messages, are a universal standard around the world. They use no data, but instead travel over the voice signaling network. There is a per message charge, or you can subscribe to an unlimited SMS package from your carrier for a fixed price per month. SMS messages will have a green "bubble".
