“Trash” can’t be opened right now because it’s being used by another task, such as moving or copying an item or emptying the Trash. Try again when the current task is complete.

How can I bypass this and delete the files without any risk of deleteing important files on my hardrive?

MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.7.5)

See -> http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/trash.html and scroll down to "Files in use by other applications."

If you don't want to trash important documents, don't put them in the Trash.
