extend desktop from macbook pro with retina display OSX 10.8.5 onto macbook pro early 2011 OSX 10.7.4

There is a software product called ScreenRecycler that will do what you want.
You could also look at Teleport (free), which allows you to control multiple Macs sitting next to each other using one keyboard and trackpad (or mouse). While you cannot have a single app span the screens, you can have separate apps on each Mac and use copy and paste as well as regular file sharing to transfer information between the systems. I use this at work between my iMac and my MacBook Pro.

Thanks Bob,
I've given ScreenRecycler a go and it's pretty good. I'm using the second monitor for my mix window in protools and ideally would have liked to run video on that screen too but unfortunately the lag is too much for that but even so, it's still workable for the mix window.
