Some users post that same problem. However, I use one Lightning cable for my 7G Nano and iPad 4 since November with no problems.
The rubber coating is tearing away and falling off leaving the braided shielding exposed.

I have not experienced that problem but it's a warranty issue. Contact Apple - 800-275-2273 in the U.S.A. and I think Canada.
I took it to an apple store. They told me I would have to call apple and there was nothing they could do for me at the store. It was a total waste of time. I have never been disappointed with an apple product until now. I guess I'll have to deal with the phone method.
Same thing is happening to me. The sheathing is literally shredding and shedding like snake skin.
Hey, Christopher, I found a good way to repair the cable. I'm using head shrink tubing. You need a piece big enough to slip over the lightning connector. Once it is in position you apply heat and the tubing shrinks. I used a candle and held the tubing close enough for it to shrink without melting or catching fire. I also went through my other cables and used the heat shrink tubing to strengthen the connection between wire and connector.
