Q: My iPhone 5 is dead and will not charge.

My iPhone 5 died last night after working fine, the only problem is since I updated to ios 7 the battery doesn not last a long time and when it dies, like now, it will not charge. There is nothing on the screen at all, not even the icon that says you need to charge the iPhone. Is my battery in need of replacing? Or is there a way to reset it for a quick fix? If the battery does need replacing does anyone know how much this will cost if I take my phone in to the aple store tomorrow? I've had it aout a year and I'm not due for an upgrade for another year!

If you have had less than a year, it should cost you nothing.

Make an appointment before going in!

Plug the device into a wall outlet for 20 minutes to allow it to charge.

If it does not boot up on it's own, try a reset by pressing and holding the home and power buttons until the white Apple logo appears.

After every iOS update there are reports of faster than normal battery discharge, basic troubleshooting from the User's Guide which is reset, restart, restore (first from backup then as new) resolves the vast majority of these issues.

If it will not power on or basic troubleshooting does not resolve, take it to Apple for evaluation.  They can run diagnostics on the device to rule out battery or other hardware issues.  As it is under 1year old, it should becovered under the warranty unless the device has been damaged (dropped or opened by someone other than Apple).  Out of Warranty replacement (worst case scenario) is $269.

How much does iPhone Battery Replacement Service cost?

Service arranged through Apple costs $79. A $6.95 shipping fee will be added if this service requires shipping. All fees are in U.S. dollars and are subject to local tax.

My Iphone5 would not accept a charge on multiple chargers, while my company issued 5 would..after refraining from tossing it against the wall I grabbed a small paperclip and carefully pulled this small mammal from the charging port (actually just pocket fuzz and dust)...However, it began charging right away.

BE CAREFUL NOT TO DESTROY THE PRONGS INSIDE YOUR PORT. use a flashlight if possible..still cant believe all this was in there..hope this helps..imagejpeg_0.jpg

Thank you.  You just saved me UK£500 as I no longer need to buy a new phone.  You, Sir, are a Star.

    I had the same issue

My phone started throwing the message "this is not an apple authorised accesory" and stopped charging.

Once the battery is completely dried out... thats phone is no longer working

Took it to Apple. They said issue is not with the battery. It is with the board / circuit.

The guy who attened the phone is a first level support staff. So, all he does is run a diagnostic test as per the fixed script he is given. The phone was not detected by his system.

I'm not happy with his answers and not convinced

As this is more than one year old, I'm not covered under warranty. Apple asked me to pay 210£ so that they will give me a new phone. forget my old phone and data

Once I pay 210£ they will tear open the phone... match all parts if they are original apple or not. then they will give me a new phone

As my contract is up for renewal in Sep 14, I'm not ready to shell any more money

I'm seriously considering moving away from Apple.

So after that little rant, what exactly is your question for us, your fellow users, in these user to user support forums?

FYI, no one here works for Apple or cares if you ever purchase another Apple device.

I went to a high street mobile repair shop and the engineer said that the bottom unit (charging socket, head phone socket - this whole thing is one unit) has to be replaced as the unit is no longer working. He said its because of some moisture accumulated there . He changed that part for 30£ and my phone is working fine. May be you want to try it, as Apple is in no mood to resolve your problem

Probably the best answer for one that has really dropped off its perch!   As for sticking clips or pins into the socket . . .  try a vacuum cleaner to suck out dust.
