I have three email accounts in mail. I can receive email in any of them but unless I choose gmail to send I cannot send. Why?
Check the smtp settings for those accounts.
Note that if those accounts are provided by your ISP, they will normally block sending unless you are connected to their network.

Is there place to choose a default email account? You can do this in Outllook
Mail/Preferences/Composing/Send new messages from.
For each account, you can choose the smtp server to use.
In the preferences, you can set whether to use one account when replying, or the account that the message was sent to.
In Mail > Preferences > Accounts > select the account > Account Information > Outoing Mail Server there is a checkbox labeled "Use only this server" that will force the particular server to be used for that account.
I have a MacBookPro and I have been unable to send gmails for a few days. I finally found the solution tonight.
I set my IMAP port (incoiming mail) to 993 and SMTP (outgoing mail to port 587 (or 465). This worked immediately. E. ROSA
