I'm trying to consolidate two scans into one. It seems that PREVIEW can be used to do this, but I don't understand the instructions. When I click on Preview>File>import from Scanner, I see the following message: 'The Scanner is in use by application 'HP PSC 1300 series app'.
What do I do now?

Seems like your scanner came with this application which is currently controlling it. Try if you get the same error when you use /Applications/Image Capture.app instead. It comes with OS X and you can use it to scan several pages into one multipage-PDF.
If you get the same error uninstall the HP software or at least quit this app.
Your alternate choice seems to be the way. The choices of where to send my scans kept jumping around, so I ended up sending them to iPhoto, where I'm trying into combine the two scans. I had wanted to send them to Preview. Is there a best place to send them for the purpose of combining two scans into one?
You can do that right inside Image Capture. You just have to select 'Show Details' or what the button is called in English. Then the option is on the right side. Just scan a page and then afterwards another one without changing the filename and it will be combined. Here’s a screenshot in german:

It took a while, but I was finally able to post the image below. Now, how do I set it so that I can combine multiple scans onn one screen?
That didn't work either. Using both Grabbit and Grab I've posted the image I want you to see, but when I click on REPLY, the words get posted but not the image. Now I'm going to have to learn now to post images on this site. i'll be back when I learn how to do that.

The image I wanted to post here is in my printer/scanner. I have tried to lift it from there with the photo icon here, but I have not been successful. It is the page for scanner settings. I had hoped that if I were able to post it here, Bjorn would be better able to help me.
What exactly is the problem, Niku? I do not quite understand. 😕 You just have to open Image Capture.app which resides in your Applications folder. Then you select your scanner if there are more than 1 devices shown in the left sidebar. After that you click on Show Details in the bottom right. This shows you all available scanner settings. Some options get only shown when you first select others. For example you need to check Use Custom Size in order to get the Auto Selection option. And you obviously need to select Format: PDF in order to see the option to combine into single document.

I realize that almost all of these settings will remain unchanged, but I wanted you to see ALL of them to make sure that we're talking about the same thing.

I have aleeady tried that. What I called "Grab" above is Apple's name for cmd+shift+4. I was able to create a screeenshot--I do it all the time--but I wasn't able to transfer it to the Apple site using the camera icon . However, I think I'll try it one more time. Maybe the third, or fourth, time it will work.
It worked this time. Actually, I'm not too surprised. I'll just accept it.
