If you are using a 3rd party adapter then that is most likely the cause ,probably not Apple licenced and word is iOS7 detects non licenced devices

Get the genuine Apple device

Could be both, have you tried un-pairing the phone with the car? And then resetting the pairing back up. There have been a couple of topics in these discussion forums where that has solved a similar issue.
