iOS 7 Voice Memos has problems

So, I upgraded to iOS 7 on my iPhone 4s recently. I've been using voice memos to record lectures for class for the last year and a half and have never had much of a problem with the app. However, with the new iOS, I've been having a ton of issues with the app. First, the lectures are generally about 50 minutes long, so my phone will inevitably lock at some point. In previous versions of the software, this wasn't an issue. I would just unlock my phone and it would go right back to the voice memos app. Now, if it's been more than a few minutes, the recording stops and goes back to the beginning, so I have to figure out where in the lecture I was. It's really frustrating, and I'm not sure why this is only now a problem.

Another issue lies in moving around within the recording. Sometimes, I want to relisten to the last 30 seconds of the lecture because I missed something. I used to be able to go to a particular part of the lecture easily, changing the exact seconds, minutes, whatever. Now, it will jump to random times, not smoothly skimming through the time. For example, if I want to get to 3 minutes and 25 seconds into the lecture, dragging the bar along jumps from :22 to 1:15 to... it's just completely random and I end up wasting a bunch of time trying to get to the right time.

Also, this was an issue in the previous version as well, but I figured it wouldn't hurt to bring it up... Voice memos doesn't multitask. Once you leave the app, the sound cuts out and I can't check email or look something up while I'm listening. However, if my phone is locked and I get a text/snap/tweet/facebook notification, I can go directly to whatever app I got the notification from. From there, the recording will keep playing and I can do whatever I want on my phone. The app would be a lot more functional if I could do this without getting a text/etc. Sometimes, I'll text myself from my computer just so I can multitask. It's really inconvenient.

Yeah... anyone know any better (free) apps for lecture recordings? I'm just about fed up with the iOS 7 version of voice memos. You're not supposed to decrease functionality...

Similar issue. I save a recording, the Iphone freezes after hitting the DONE for saving the name and then it sits on 0:00 for 5-10 minutes or longer. Blinking and saying recording or not recording. I have to reset the phone which I then lose the lecture. This is also a problem with recording back to back classes, since. I often attempt to save the one lecture and then record the next. The problem also will save only portions of the lecture say a 55 minute lecture only becomes 3 minutes saved. Utterly confused and don't know what to do. Plenty of space on my Iphone. As I don't save the recordings to the phone, I usually down load them quickly to my lap top. Beyond Frustrating

I absolutely HATE the new version, every single thing about it from the way it starts up, to the random stopping bug, to the display of previous recordings to asking me to name the memos. If I wanted to name the memos, I'd use a different voice recorder -- at least there should be an option "Ask for name when finished recording?"

One bug I haven't seen reported is that when I'm finished with a recording, press "Done" and exit the app, my phone (iphone 4) main screen has the red bar across indicating that a recording is in progress with time 00:00.

If Apple wants to sell the previous version of Voice Memo for a buck or two, I'd certainly buy it. What a perfect and simple app that was. The new calendar is awful too. If the designers want to simply CHANGE something in their lives, how about hurl a can of paint at their walls? Why inflict bad designs on millions of users? Is there a way we can vote "This is perfect JUST AS IT IS!" so they don't change an app pointlessly? If we wanted a different interface and features, we'd buy a different recording app. (I have purchased several, in fact, but almost always used Voice Memo for its reliability.) Bummer.

Im a musician & I use Voice memo app everyday. I've tested many voice recorder apps & so far haven't found one better than the app installed on iPhone iOS 6. Today I upgraded to ios7 & im super disappointed with the voice memos app now. This is my most used app & its Terrible now.

It used to be very quick, simple, one touch & done. Now I hit the rec botton & just wait & wait. Then I finally record something, now I have to name it?? Why?? I don't want to name everything I do. There's too many steps when it should be like iOS 6 simple & fast & move on. Tap the file twice like before & it played.

Many musicians I know use this app. It's not just for lectures, so along with all that, I will add that it would be great to have a couple features added to this app such as;

Folders, for sorting similar ideas or lectures.

Audio FX like Reverb, Treble, Bass & Mid.

Continuous play even when using another app.

Hope to see these changes & additions made someday, even though it's probably just a dream.

Now I think I'll have to go buy a stand alone audio recorder.

Me too... anyone figure out a workaround yet? Really disappointed with the ios7 upgrade for this. I also have long interviews and it's a totaly hassle losing my place and, even if remember where i was, it is a challenge to get to that spot. Seems like Safari doesn't multi-task well either -- pages always refresh when I return and wasting lots of time.

This is a HUGE problem, Apple, please fix!!!!! As a musician, I rely on the voice memos to record ideas and practices and the app has been shutting down mid song / jam. Imagine recording for 30 minutes, thinking all your brilliant ideas are recorded for posterity and future use and then dicovering the app shut down after 30 seconds. It's a terrible feeling. I also strongly dislike the naming feature, it was much better when memos were automatically named with the time and date, much easier for reference. You guys really screwed up this release.

Hey guys so since my last post I got tired of battling with the new voice memo app and ios7. I tested many many recording apps and in my opinion for ease of use, features and of course number one Sound, I found Recordium to be pretty **** good so far.

Its free to try on app store. Hope you get back to recording asap. Me I'm testing an android phone now and I have to say,, its pretty awesome! Cheers

Hi KT and others in this thread. We seemed to have a reasonable and stable longterm fix for this issue of unsaved or incomplete capture of VOICE RECORDING (voice memo) on iOS7.0.6 . So far after 3 days of use, this resolution seems to have worked. This method is also partially mentioned here by poster @THRONED in https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5422768?answerId=23329869022#23329869022 reflected in these threads and they should have most of the credit for this method.

I have added a few extra steps that readers who wish to preserve ALL the VOICE MEMO recordings may heed and implement. We've performed this twice to verify. It appears to be sound.

NOTEs!:

make sure you perform the steps to BACKUP and make a 3rd instance of you itunes library!

the procedure DOES NOT delete or affect the iOS device's content nor it's apps.. just some iOS device settings that can easily be manually set again.

Whats's the cause:

dunno.. looks like legacy versions of the Voice Memo/ Audio Recorder settings and legacy recordings from iOS6 - this is speculation on our part.

Software applications required:

  •  iTunes.app
  •  iOS7 Voice recorder.app
  • (optional only!) Phoneview.app from http://ecamm.com/mac/phoneview/) - has "copy from iPHONE" for "Voice Memos" - outside of iTUNES management.

Summary of procedure will do:

  1. backup and make a separate instance of you iTUNES library or you specific voice memo recordings.
  2. back up the IOS device where the voice recording issues occur use separate or NEW iTUNES library (see detail for why)
  3. make a 2nd instance of 2.
  4. delete all the Voice Recordings in the Voice Recorder.app
  5. perform a RESET SETTINGS on the affected iOS device
  6. reinstate the iOS deice from iTUNES using specialised SYNc option or REIMPORT the Voice recordings
  7. review the Voice Recordings in the iOS7.0.x Voice Recorder.app on the affected device.

Detailed Procedure:

  1. In iTunes.app on your MAC, open the Preferences / Advanced and NOTE the location of your active itunes library in the UI BOX "iTunes Media Folder Location". We have several.. this is the actve one on another file system. YOurs may be in ~/Music/name-of-your_itunes_library

record (note) the file path. For example... the file path in ORANGE..

    • User uploaded file
  2. QUIT iTunes.app on your mac.
  3. backup and make a separate instance of you iTUNES library or you specific voice memo recordings.
    • need to do this for an uncontaminated iTUNES library and as a method resinstate a failed library.
    • do this EVEN if you use TIMEMACHINE! failure to do so may make way for tears and suffering.
    • on your MAC, NAvigate to your itunes library in Step 1. and make a COPY (a second instance) of your iTUNES library using the OSX Finder +D or option+drag to duplicate or use unix cp or sync -rav command

      terminal.app: rsync -rav --progress ~/music/my-itunes-library ~/somewhere_else_safe/my-itunes-library_instance_02

  4. IMPORTANT - UNTICK the iTUNES.app / Preferences/ Devices
    • don't permit the iOS device to start synchronising when it's connected. This will overwrite the iTUNES library we set up in STEP 1.

we'll enable when it's all fixed up.

    • User uploaded file
    • if you have the iOS device synchronising over WIFI, disable WIFI (turn it off) and 4G on your iOS device.

no interuptions during this method...you can re-enable them later.

  5. back up the IOS device where the voice recording issues occur.
    • using the USB cable, plug the iOS device into your MAC
    • select the iOS device in the iTUNES side back then
      1. Click on SUMMARY tab at top then
      2. Enable the radio button "Automatically Backup" in "This Computer" - need the backp locally incase of a corrupt iOS device. You can delete it later.
    • again select the device in the iTUNES side bar under DEVICES,
      • gear down (right mouse, cntl+click) and BACKUP the iOS device -- let it complete backup.. then
      • gear down (right mouse, cntl+click) and SYNC the iOS device -- let it complete synchronisation

    • this SWILL create a new BACKUP for the iOS device ins your homes directory at /Library/Application Support/MobileSync/Backup
    • let the iOS device backup complete to have an current iOS device image to restore incase of an issue.
    • At this stage you should have an instance of the ACTIVE itunes created in STEP 3. and a BACKUP of the iOS device from Step 5.
  6. REview the VOICE MEMOS in iTUNES Library - several ways ... so this easy way.
    • in iTUNES.app on the MAC, create a new SMART PLAYLIST and filer only media type is "Voice Memo"
    • User uploaded file
    • rename the smartist to taste and REVIEW the objetcs in there. If all is going to plab=n, then all your iOS device recordings are there.
    • play them on the MAC om iTUNEs and verify.
  7. OPTIONAL STEPS ONLY 7.1 and/or 7.2 -- only perform either or both of these to keep a 3rd or 4th instance of you VOICE MEMOS. from your iPHONE
    1. Copy Voice MEMO's from iTunes Library to external folder. .../iTunes Music/Voice Memos

NAvigate to your Active iTunes folder from Step.1 and open the folder within called ./iTunes Music/Voice Memos

      • for example.. this one is at path: /Volumes/internal_raid_zero/iTunes_libraries_all/warwicks_iTunes_library_macpro/iTunes Music/Voice Memos

use the FINDER or similar to COPY the entire contents of the "Voice Memos" folder to another plave on your mac. Use the desktop

    2. (note this only optional and required a licenced version of the Phoneview.app from http://ecamm.com/mac/phoneview).
  8. Only need to do this for some additional protection for your VOICE MEMOs'
  9. This COPIEs the Voice Recordings from your iOS devices directly to your mac.
  10. Quit iTunes if active
  11. Launch Phoneview.app and select Data/ Voice Memos in left side bar.
  12. Select "copy from ixxxxx" in the icon bar and copy them to the desktop or somewhere safe.
  13. Quit iTUNES.app (and or Phoeview.app) if active on your mac.
  14. Disconnect the iOS device from your MAC..(unplug it from USB cable)
    • and make sure WIFI and 4G if STILL off for the moment. We don't want it synchronising to the iTUNES or to th iCLOUD.
    • yes a bit extreme but worth doing.!
  15. on th iOS7 device, launch "Voice Memos.app" and DELETE all the current Recordings!
    • be assured you have instances of resulting from most ofthe previous steps.
    • There way be a way to DELETE them all.. so posy it here if you do..
    • Unfortunately you will need to SWIPE DELETE them all
    • here's an example..
    • User uploaded file
  16. on the iOS device, QUIT "Voice Memo".app
    • hit home butt TWICE
    • locate "Voice Memo".app slide it UP and out!
  17. on iOS device, Select Settings > / General > (scroll down) / Reset > / and select "Reset All Settings"
    • NOTE that only some basic settings are removed and you can add them manually later.
    • Follow the DEFAULT prompts
    • The iOS device will restart
  18. So now the iOS device should have NO Voice Memos and have SOMe default settings
  19. Open iTUNES.app on your mac and organise (MANAGE) you voice memos
    • rename them, group in smart play lists etc..worth doing
    • REVIEW that all the VOICE MEMOS are available in your current iTUNES library.. the should all be there from hte previous steps.
