How do you use the birthday icon on the calendar of iphone5 and iPad? Thanks

One uses it by simply looking at it and enjoying the fact that it reminds you of a birthday.

Open the Contacts app > Select a contact > Edit > ➕ add field (at bottom) > Birthday > enter date
In Contacts app add your contacts birthday info into the Contacts.
