What happened to Publish / Subscribe?

I still keep ClarisWorks 5 (Classic only) to open documents I created using the wonderful OLE-type Publish / Subscribe feature it has.

Does anyone know why it was dropped from AppleWorks, or is it still there somewhere, hidden quietly from view?

CW5 is one reason why I can never migrate to an Intel Mac, unless some kind soul writes an OS 9 emulator for it on the same lines as Virtual PC.

Probably someone on the team that developed AW 6 does, but I don't think the reason has ever been publicly stated.

No. It's gone.

You might want to update CW 5 to AppleWorks 5.0.4, the last CW/AW 5 version. Make a copy of your current CW folder and put it in a safe place before doing the update so you'll be able to easily revert if you decide CW is better for your purposes.

You'll find the updater here:

1. Does this thread contain anything useful?

Yes it does - I've added my own two cents' worth to it. Thanks

2. You can use SheepShaver to run Mac OS 9 applications on an Intel Mac.

That sounds very interesting, I've had a look at the site but it only supports up to OS 9.0. But that might not be a problem, even though Classic is 9.2.2, because I only need it for CW/AW5 and Photoshop 2 (saves JPEGs in half the size of PS7 - great for emailing pictures!). Oh, and a few ancient games which don't even run in Classic anyway.

It seems that Publish / Subscribe has gone forever.
Pity, it was a good feature, and considering that the
Windows equivalent (OLE) is an integral part of Word
and Windows, it seems a strange decision that Apple
might like to review some day soon.

I'd imagine Apple had a few reasons for not using Publish & Subscribe including that it was little used and was a potential security problem.

OLE on Windows is now known as COM or ActiveX. I work in an office with hundreds of PCs. I've rarely seen a user actually use OLE in day-to-day work.

ActiveX might be integral to Windows, but it's main purpose seems to be letting viruses, trojans, etc use your PC. The OLE/COM/ActiveX functionality is being significantly limited in upcoming versions of Windows and IE 7 because of these security reasons.
