Encryption - is there any protection when my iPhone is unlocked?

Does the built-in encryption offer any protection once my iPhone is unlocked and in operation? or is it just a protection so that the phone and its contents can't be accessed when the phone is locked?

iPhone 5, iOS 6.1.4

If it is unlocked, whomever has it in their hands has as much access as you do when using it unlocked.

The encryption effectively does not apply if the user has full access to the device home screen and interface. The device has no way of know who is using it, just that it is unlocked and someone is using it as it was designed to be used.

Really, the only security feature in iOS to safeguard your content is the lock code.

Its a bit like asking if you give the keys to your house to someone, are you safe from them snooping around once inside.
