transfer my OS to a larger drive

I have a mac pro 8 core and need to upgrade my hard drive to a 1TB. I know how to format it. I can also add ML, but I want to bring everything over from my 640TB Drive. Without a firewire cable (I dont' have an external housing) if I insert the drive in one of the 4 bays can I I use migrate or transfer from the original drive that is housed in one of my 4 bays?

Can I use the same password for my new drive? I admin password, or do the two drives have to be different?

Thanks.

Mac Pro, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.3), early 2009 8 core 2.4Ghz processors

Yes, you can install ML and migrate within Setup Assistant from any system drive. It's important to do the migration on the first boot or else a second account will be created and it will be messy trying to sort it.

An alternative is to use SuperDuper or CarbonCopy Cloner,

to clone your drive onto the new one.

You can have the same passwords on both drives.

I did that recently.

(a) using CCC I cloned my hard drive to an external drive.

(b) tested the clone by booting from it

(c) removed the old drive and installed the new (bigger, faster) one

(d) booted from the external drive

(e) cloned back from the external drive to the new internal one.

Job done !

transfer my OS to a larger drive
