Belkin WeMo Switch with 6th Gen Time Capsule

Set up:

6th Generation Time Capsule

Belkin WeMo Switch ( Ver VA01 - F7C027uk)

iPhone 5s

iOS7

WeMo App version 1.2.1.6

Airport version 7.7.1

WPA2 Personal

Hi.

Anyone have a solution to getting the Belkin WeMo Swith working with my Apple network?

In short, the App finds the WeMo, and see's my Apple network. It prompts me to enter my password

User uploaded file

when it says

"The WeMo App was unable to connect to 'MY WIFI NAME' - Please rty re-entering your password"

User uploaded file

Of course, I know what my password is. I have other devices connected to it without issue.

I had the same problem on iOS 6, iPhone 5, and 4th Generation Time Capsule. So I reported to Belkin who sent out 2 replacement devices - same issue.

I have tried all 2.4Ghz channels to no avail.

RANT: Belkin Support is near on useless. No product specialist have been in touch Have 3 different case numbers! I have Tweeted and @BelkinCares have asked me to contact them directly.....again!

I really want these to work. Any help or advice to get them running will be greatly appreciated.

Shot in the dark, but does your password have any special characters in it? When I used to do network consulting I found once in a while a particular device would not like a password with special characters, sometimes special characters can be misinterpreted as they can be used in some programming languages. I know it can be hassle, but have you tried changing your password for testing? I have a TC, but not a WeMo so I can't comment on any direct experience. Alternatively, can't you turn on the guest network in the TC and turn off the password? I'm not sure off the top of my head, I do not use the guest network. This way you could test a different password without modifying your current home network? Then turn off the guest network once you're done/satisfied.

Best of luck,

Steven

Take previous comment a bit further..

Are all names SMB compatible.. that means short, no spaces and pure alphanumeric.

That is the wireless name, TC name and disk share name.

You must have some link otherwise it could not find the belkin in the phone app.

Belkin and Apple.. hmm.. that is never a happy combo.

WeMo are particularly difficult in apple networks.

Is your phone on wifi and not via 3G network?

Here I am being told to keep my ideas to myself.. but same problem.. belkin doesn't work.

General useless nature of the Belkin support team.

Sorry I was hoping to find a solution for you.

Best bet.. get a standard wireless router.. ie not apple.

Set up the network again and see if the iphone app can reach the belkin WeMo over the network.. I suspect it will work fine.

The issue then is Apple routers simply do not recognise the protocol that Belkin is using. You might be able to bypass the issue by using a different WAP.. the one you used for the above test.. plugged into the TC and see if that works.

Yes

Tried examples of password12345 , qwerty12345 etc

TC name is simply AirPort

Disk - AirPort TC

Correct - The App see's the WeMo. WeMo sees the Airport. It just will not accept password

Is your phone on wifi and not via 3G network?

Yes, on WiFi

I disagree, sorry. The Apple routers work with every other device I have ( Apple and non Apple devices) Its clear that the WeMo is at fault, be it just a lousy product or not compatible with Apple kit.

This is, and always been the case that the app can reach the WeMo over the network. That is not the problem.

Thanks for your input ;-)

So - interesting..............

I changed the name of my network from AirPort to airport (note - all lowercase)

Used simple password - password1234

I CONNETED!!

Reset name of network to Airport and changed my password

I CONNECTED

Reset name of network to AirPort - FAILED.

So I am assuming that the WeMo does not like 2 uppercase letters in the network name??

So back to Airport - The WeMo detected a new Firmware update - heck - Im installing that - lets see if that gets Fubard! I still have a second one to play with.....

Update to follow!

The fact that Apple is selling these is irrelevant. They're made by Belkin and this issue should be handled by Belkin, Apple can't test every manufacturers wifi product. Even if Apple wasn't satisfied with the product and pulled it from their shelves you can buy them at all kinds of electronic stores now, so the issues would still persist.

Anywho, let's start at the basic stuff. Maybe you could try turning off encryption all together for a few minutes to see if it connects? If it does then I'd say there is a compatibility issue with the encryption type or password. At that point maybe change the password to something different? If you turn off encryption and it still doesn't work maybe change the name of the wifi network to something simple like airport with no encryption and see what happens. If you're still unable to connect maybe you've got a faulty WeMo? Maybe contact Belkin support for further assistance? They might be able to tell if you if they are aware of the difficulty apple users are having and if they are working ok a fix.

Good luck and post back results

Turned off the security with open network, it still doesnt want to connect and said that the router is out of range. But in fact im seeing full signals. I've already contacted Belkin support, seems like they are from out of country tech support. Not really helpful at all and they seem like they do not know what they are talking about. I think I might return the product and wait until they launch a new version . 😠

Same problem. I had airport security set to WPA2, a very long password, and could not get the WEMO app to work. Tried more than 20 times, restarted app, changed passwords on the airport network (made sure they contained no symbols etc). No luck.

What worked for me in the end was:

1. Updated settings in AirPort Utility to "WPA/WPA2 personal", rather than "WPA2 personal". Waited for Airport Express to restart.

2. Verified that iPhone connected to airport network.

3. Opened WEMO app and connected to WEMO network.

4. Selected AirPort network. This time WEMO connected fine, and was able to work.

5. Updated settings from "WPA/WPA2 personal" back to "WPA2" in AirPort Utility. Waited for AirPort Express to restart.

6. Verified that the WEMO app kept working. It did! Strange.
