Q: I can no longer repair permissions with Disk Utility, v. 13

After installing iTunes update 11.1, I can no longer repair permissions with Disk Utility, v. 13. When I attempt to repair Disk Permissions, there appear dozens of items showing that "Permissions differ on "Applications/iTunes.app....", then it says that it has been repaired. However, when I do a second or third repair immediately afterwards, I see the same thing again.

I beg to differ with my friend macjack, but those will never be repaired because they're supposed to be folders, but are files. However, you can ignore them, since Apple needs to fix the problem and you can't.

    This is the operative phrase, unless you are having problems with permissions while running your Mac, shake your head and forget it. The iTunes update changed hundreds of permissions. They are changed, that's all. Carry on.

    I beg to differ with my friend macjack, but those will never be repaired because they're supposed to be folders, but are files. However, you can ignore them, since Apple needs to fix the problem and you can't.

    Unless you are having performance issues with the Mac that have their most likely cause in Permissions being incorrect I would not be doing anything with the Disk Permissions through Disk Utility.

     

    Software updates will often change files and permissions and unless the permissions comparison file is updated so that Disk Utility has a valid reference point changing permissions can cause more problems than they fix.

    It IS because I noticed a slowdown in my computer that I attempted to repair the Permissions. I can only hope that Apple gets baltwo's message and fixes the problem.

    nibs are not folders anymore. They are XML files. As always, Permission Repair is incorrect and superfluous.

    Apple will never "fix" it as there is nothing wrong. When the iTunes receipt file gets updated, Permissions Repair my stop posting all of those.

     

    Incorrect Permissions will not slow your Mac. The OS doesn't say, "hey, you don't have permission to access that file, I'll just slow you down a bit, but still give you access."

    If you, or the process, does not have permission to access something, it will prevent you from accessing it. The process will display an error, or just crash.

    Yes the ITUNES permissions issues even if they say they are being repaired with Disk Utility show up again in in my situation it , with 24 hours, produces a continually spinning beachball when using either Firefox or Safari. If I run DU the browsers work just fine..... for another day.

    Hi - I'm not sure if my problem is related to this or not, but after installing the iTunes update, my hard drive will no longer start up.  I get a grey screen the OS X Utilities.  Disk Utility will verify the disk and says all is ok but the computer won't start up.  The only think I can find is the problem with iTunes permissions.  AppleCare tried various option to open the computer in safe mode but nothing happens.  They have said I may need a new hard drive.  Any thoughts!  Thanks.   Lyn

    It doesn't matter what the permissions on iTunes happen to be, it won't stop your Mac from starting.

     

    What happens when you try to start in Safe Mode?

    The computer will not start in Safe mode.  Resetting the pram didn't help, nor did trying to do a system check with the computer off.     L

    Can you boot into Recovery by holding down Cmd-R on restart.

    It should boot and present you with options to Use Disk Utility, Reinstall, or get help online.

    If you see it start booting with a spinning Globe, it has booted into Internet Recovery.

     

    Once booted, go into Disk Utility, select your Hard Drive, and click the First Aid tab.

    Then, click Repair Disk.

     

    If it goes into Internet Recovery, you may have something wrong with your Hard Drive.

     

    Also, what happens when you try to start in Safe Mode? How far does it get? Do you see the Progress bar?
