I hate NEW SMART MAIL how do I go back to USE CLASSIC LAYOUT?
Mail -> Preferences -> Viewing
check the "Use classic layout" box

I have gone on VIEWING...NO box to check for USE CLASSIC LAYOUT ??
This is in mail preferences? There's a really big checkbox right at the top.
I have been on VIEWING constantly...NO check box for CLASSIC MAIL

Then you're in the wrong forum. The display mode mentioned by the others above came into Mail only with Mac OS X 10.7 and doesn't apply to Mail in Mac OS X 10.5.8. I'd suggest you repost in the 10.5 Leopard forum and explain more fully, with perhaps screen shots, what you mean by "Smart Mail".

OK then you probably have threading enabled in Mail. You need to turn off "group by thread" or whatever it's called. There's a menu item for it somewhere but I'll leave it for you to search, as you posted in the wrong forum (by 3 full OS X versions).
