Q: Powerbook G4 goes to sleep straight after starting/waking up

My G4 15" was overheating so I removed the upper case to see if dust was the problem. There was hardly any dust so I put it all back together, including the two flex cables connecting the upper case (keyboard) to the main board. Now whenever I start it up it goes straight into sleep mode, and if I wake it, it decides to go straight back to sleep before I have chance to do anything. The trackpad is also no longer working (the keyboard is fine).

I took it apart and put it back together two more times but it didn't help. I have tried ressting the PMU and booting in safe mode, both of which were unsuccesful.

Anyone got any ideas, please?

Ben

There is a magnetic switch on the right edge of the case that is tripped by a magnet in the lid when you close it. The switch controls sleep.

See if it got knocked about when you were inside.

    Hi Allan,

Thanks for enlightening me on the probable cause of the problem. I'm having trouble locating the magnetic switch – could you explain its position or show me a pic?

I should also point out that it is an older machine and has a latch mechanism to keep the lid/screen closed.

    Hello,

Some people have previously reporting a problem with the tracker pad temperature sensor.

This can make your PowerBook go to sleep the moment it's woken.

If your tracker pad is not working, it could also mean the temperature sensor isn't working either and making it go to sleep. I'd check the ribbon cable. Make sure there is no damage to it from the tracker pad to the logic board.

@Knucklesmac, I did take out the ribbon cables so I could remove the top case, but then put it back how it was. I can't see how it would have got damaged within that short space of time. Would you know where the

    sensor is located?

    Still haven't resolved the problem.

Could anyone tell me the location of the magnetic switch that controls sleep and/or the trackpad heat sensor in the above photos, please?
