Q: how do I turn on closed caption from the apple tv remote

How do I turn on closed caption form the 3rd generation apple TV remote.  I used my cell phone app and it is simple using the iphone app however my husband watches Apple TV with just the apple remote and is unable to turn on closed caption.  Thanks?
