If you are trying to preserve space on your internal hard drive, here is the only thing I've found: how to move your iMovie library to an external:
So I can't use flash drives?
You can, if you want to shuffle a lot of them.
As the files in a project take up a lot of room, a larger external hard drive would be better.
Here's the Problem. Whenever I try to save to another location the project erases everything that I saved
There isn't a "Save" function in iMovie.* Can you explain what you are doing?
*At least not in iMovie '11.
Well I drag the the project into the desktop, then I dragged the file into my flash drive
You should just drag the project into the flash drive from within iMovie as noted by babowa.
If it is not showing up in the Drive list, it is likely not formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled), which is likely why it gets damaged when you drag it to the flash drive.
Also, what version are you using? I can't drag a project to the Desktop (or anywhere). If it is not iMovie '11, I'm not familiar with it.
I have iMovie 11 installed
