airport extreme, power book and windows 98 PC

Hello,
My husband recently bought a Mac Power book and an Airport Extreme. I have a PC still running Windows 98 (soon to be a MAC, though!). I have Internet access via a cable modem. We want to set up the airport extreme so that he can pick up the Internet wirelessly. I have no experience with such and would like some assistance how to do it correctly.

Power down the cable modem.

Wait 30 minutes (go and have a cup of tea or something)

Connect the cable modem to the WAN port of the Airport Extreme Base Station (AEBS).

Connect the Windows 98 PC to the LAN port.

Switch on the cable modem.

Switch on the AEBS.

Wait five minutes.

Switch on the Mac.

Use the Airport Setup Assistant in the Utilities folder to configure the AEBS.

Nice to get such a quick response. Another question....do I need to contact my ISP for any special input or changes from them? Going to give this a try now!

Thanks. I followed your instructions and we are up and running on both computers. The MAC was able to access the Internet right away without doing any configuring in the Airport Setup Assistant -- is this okay? Or is there something there that must be configured. Also, the 98PC was unable to find the server at first. I restarted it and then was able to access Internet. So far so good. Just want to know whether we are lacking input to the Airport setup assistant.

Generally I would advise adding wireless security (WPA) for your wireless clients (the Mac).

Would you be so kind to advise how to add WPA for the wireless client, i.e. the MAC? I am unfamiliar with MAC and need some direction? Thank you for your expertise!

Use WPA2 if all the client support it.

Applications > Utilities > Airport Admin Utility

Scan and Select your Airport

Click Configure

Enter the Airport password (the default is "public").

On the Airport Tab

Change Wireless Security

Change to WPA2 (or use WPA)

Use a password like this

Remember it.

Click OK

Click Update.

You will now be thrown off the wireless network.

Wait 5 minutes.

Select your network from the Airport menu.

Enter the password.

Done.
