New 32GB iPhone 5s Has Only 27.5GB Capacity - Is this Correct?

Hi all,

I just got a new 32GB iPhone 5s. Before setting anything up, I noticed that in "Settings --> General --> About" my phone is shown as having a capactiy of only 27.5GB, with 26.8GB available.

This is a new phone with nothing but stock apps on it. Anyone know why the disparity is so large? I'm aware that there is a decimal vs binary issue at play, but it seems that after converting to binary, the phone should still have a capacity of 29.8GB, and I'm sitting at 2.3GB under that. (My quick math: 32,000,000 / 1024 = 31250 / 1024 = 30.5175 / 1024 = .0298, or 29.8GB)

Is this normal? I am as bad at math as I've suspected? Any ideas?

Thanks!

Are you fellas new to technology in general or what? You make it sound as if the iPhone is the first storage device in the whole wide world to have less than the stated GB. This has been the norm since time immemorial when it comes to anything storage related, from computer HD's to flash drives to mp3 players, etc.

[For example, that 1TB hard drive has less than a whole terabyte of free usable space.]

Where do you think the O.S (Operating System) and system files reside? Those take up some GB's, and some more space is "lost" to file formatting as well.
