How do I Stop 'Start up Chime' on OSx 10.8.5

How do I Stop 'Start up Chime' on OSx 10.8.5

I used to have it disabled on previous mac systems fine.

I want system sounds to still hear email alerts and facetime calls, but stop the annoying loud startup chime.

Any suggestions please. (startninka app didnt work!!)

Thansk Carolyn.

There are ways to mute it, and its still opened and safe. Its very loud and annoying when you start work at 6am somedays at home, or switch a mac on late at night to check work or emails...

I've always had it stwiched off in previous OSx systems. Its a shame i cant seem to to it in 10.8.5 at the mo,

Any ideas how to mute it totally?

I find it extremely irritating but there is no need to mute it completely.

If you can remember to lower your volume so that only 1, 2 or 3 "little white blocks" are visible before you shutdown, when you launch your Mac again the chime will be audible but pleasantly subdued.

The only problem is remembering to reduce the volume before shutdown!

Thanks for all your input.

Id like to just say that i know its an important chime, but my mac switching on shows me that the its passed an important start up! It's rather irritating when its chimes out real loud when working early, disturbing others around. Especially when working at home.

macjackI have a feeling 10.8.5 isnt allowing the Terminal tweak commmand, but I will try that and see. Thanks though as great tip.

The Chime is a totally uneccessary noise really. As a busy art director and designer who has used apple macs since they first came out - its the bane of mac use.

Paul_31 - the mute key sounds like a good option too.... will test that.

Thanks all, ill get back to you if that **** chime doesnt drive me mad!!!

Another option is to use "Sleep" mode. Your computer will still turn off the screen and hard drive and other features that use a lot of power, it will consume very little power and use just enough to keep the RAM active. At which point when you press the power button, or click the mouse, or press a key on the keyboard your computer will come right back up and won't make any noise.

CHIME CRIME update

no luck as yet! Working at home office and early starts are awful with the Chime so loud!!!!

I tired the adding programme to Terminal...did not work.

Also 'Chime Stopper'- (yet to test) https://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/13170/startup-chime-stopper

But...

I found last night the 'Startup Pref Pane' in System Prefs... this should stop the 'Chime Crime'
so i can only test this and see what happens

This could be the answer for OSX 10.8.5....

Will update you all if it works

To enable a password to be entered from Sleep. You first need to go to Security & Privacy in System Preferences. Then to the General tab. Check the Required password "x amount of time" after sleep or screen saver begins.

Using Sleep hardly uses any power at all. But it also depends on your Mac, is it a desktop or laptop? Sleep can use some battery if laptop, but not that much. Besides your probably have it plugged in over night anyways.

Sorry to dash your hopes but Startup Sound doesn't work on Mountain Lion (and possibly even Lion ..... I can't remember for certain).

Something about these latest operating systems knocked out its functionality.

The only thing that works is hitting the mute key or better still reducing the volume to a whisper as I mentioned earlier BUT YOU HAVE TO REMEMBER TO DO IT BEFORE YOU SHUTDOWN ...... and most of the time you will forget!

Letting the computer sleep uses less than 1 watt of electricity which is minimal by even the greenest person's standard, however I always like to shutdown as a restart gets rid of all the dross caused by opening and closing apps etc. that slows down the computer as you work

And I bet you shutting down and turning on a computer on a daily bases would use more electricity than that.

Personally with my 2012 Mac Mini, I don't ever shut it down or Sleep it. She's running 24/7, except when I go on vacation and/or install software that requires a reboot.

I also use iStat Pro, available on both Mac and iPhone. Where I can monitor my Mac Mini on my iPhone anywhere I am at. If I see it using a lot of recourses. Because of a malfunctioning app. I then would use "Find My iPhone" and send it a shut down signal. It only has happened twice in the last year.
