Dec 24, 2013 5:22 AM in response to Aurora1967by Shooroopski,How stupid I am...
After 10.8.5 supplemental update I saw that mach_kernel file in Mac HD root, and for some i-dunno-what-the-**** reason I moved it to trash.
now after restart all I have is some options to reinstall, repair and such... file still in the trash...
Precious people, is there some way to undo my stupid act using Terminal ?
Hope for a miracle !

Dec 24, 2013 5:26 AM in response to Shooroopskiby Csound1,What happens when you take the option to repair?
What is 'and such'
-
Dec 24, 2013 5:38 AM in response to Csound1by Shooroopski, option to repair brings disk utility, which didn't help.
"and such" is options to recover from time machine, to get help from internet, but these are not what is needed.
Is there terminal command just for moving mach_kernel from trash to Macintosh HD root ?

Dec 24, 2013 5:42 AM in response to Shooroopskiby thomas_r.,Sounds like you're in recovery mode. It would probably be easiest to just reinstall Mac OS X from there. This will install on top of your existing system, and will leave everything else alone. Your documents, installed apps and such would be unaffected. (Of course, if you don't have backups, something could go wrong there.)
This will replace the missing mach_kernel file.

Dec 24, 2013 5:44 AM in response to thomas_r.by Shooroopski,Ok, thanks ! My system was 10.8.5, but the DVD I have is 10.6 ... will the reinstall affect the files, documents ?

Dec 24, 2013 5:47 AM in response to Shooroopskiby thomas_r.,No, you reinstall from recovery mode. This will re-download your current system from Apple's servers and install it on top of the current system, replacing the existing files with new copies.

Dec 24, 2013 5:52 AM in response to thomas_r.by Shooroopski,The problem is that in my area ( Bali island ) there is no broadband internet at all, so downloading the whole system will take life. Some other way ?
you sure there is no way to move that file from trash using terminal ?

Well, there is, but it will require some work. The basic form of the command is as follows:
mv /Volumes/"Your HD Name"/Users/yourshortusername/.Trash/mach_kernel /Volumes/"Your HD Name"/
The "Your HD Name" part should be replaced with the name of your computer's hard drive, and it should be in quotes if it contains any spaces or other odd characters. You should also replace "yourshortusername" with the short form of your user name, which is the same as the name of your home folder.
The difficulty is that if you don't type everything just right, you could end up doing something unpredictable, including losing track of that file entirely.
In addition, I suspect that the owner, group and permissions on that file might have been changed as a result of moving it into your trash. Repairing permissions in Disk Utility after moving the file back should correct that.

Yes, the drive will need to be erased so everything on it at that time will be gone.

That is not correct. That is only the case if he actually wanted to downgrade to 10.6. He can still reinstall 10.8.5 using recovery mode, if he so chooses, without erasing the hard drive.

I'll just step out and let you resolve the foregoing then.

Dec 24, 2013 6:30 AM in response to Shooroopskiby crzyhrse,Just to ask the obvious, have you tried booting from your Snow Leopard disk holding down the c key and seeing if you can access your harddrive folders/files and moving the kernal that way..?

Dec 24, 2013 6:38 AM in response to crzyhrseby Shooroopski,Yes, it is booting up, but I'm not familiar ( yet ) with terminal basics, so moving the files without finder still just a Christmas wish ))
