Did you do all updates?
You have to update your computer and all applications before you can sync with ios7 device.
Yes Sir, Got the latest Itunes for my laptop; 2.5 Ghz Intel Core i7, 8GB RAM. Latest for the iphone 5S; 7.02. Device doesn't appear in itunes as it has before with the 4S. Thanx for the promt response. I will check the links you've provided now.

Yes Ma'am, Thought I did update the software, on the MacBook Pro, and the 5S. Will check the links provided by Mr. 77, and let you know the results. meanwhile, any other thoughts will be appreciated.

When in Itunes 11 (latest), Device section found in the 'File' Menu is grayed. When trying to pair the iphone with the MacBook Pro i'm told MacBook not supprted in this iphone. Wifi seems connected and recognized sucessfully. According to my Mac, all software is updated. Even tried the different usb ports; nothing. I know I'm missing something simple, so what might it be?
Still trying. Even reinstalled OSX. From articles suggested:
Updated all apps. still nothing.....................Anyone?
Got it, and it only took all day/night. Had to use the USB cable provided by Apple, and not the 3rd party cable. Thanx folks.
I'm having the same problem--latest version of iTunes 11.1.1 and brand new USB cable that came with new iPhone 5s. I tried on two different computers: iMac and MacBook Pro Retina running the latest OS X and iTunes. No luck...both computers report that "iTunes cannot connect to <name of iPhone> because the device timed out."
Having same issue with iphone 5 and new itunes version running under Mavericks. Never had this issue before. Using the USB cable that came from apple/with the phone.
UPDATE -- I upgraded my OS to Mavericks and now, the phone is recognized in iTunes.
No luck for me. I changed cable, rebooted MBP and I get the same message as Vllini.
After purchasing a new iPhone 5S I had a problem syncing iTunes with the iPhone...At the Apple Store, the Service Rep backed up my iPhone to iCloud in order to transfer all data from the old phone to the new phone. At home when I tried to sync iTunes with my new iPhone 5S, iTunes would not recognize my new phone. I discovered iTunes was configured to back up data to my Mac hard drive and the iPhone was configured to back up data to iCloud. There was a conflict, subsequently causing iTunes to not recognize my new iPhone 5S. My solution was to delete iCloud from the iPhone. After doing this, iTunes synced with the iPhone with no problems. No data was lost and syncing occurred normally.
I recommend these as possible solutions:
1) The Apple store will back up your phone using iCloud. Make sure that iTunes is configured to back up to iCloud before you plug your new phone into iTunes for syncing/back-up. If your iTunes is configured to back up data to your hard drive, ensure that the Apple Store does not back up your phone data to iCloud. You will have to back up all iPhone data yourself at home on iTunes.
2) If they insist on backing up your phone data to iCloud from your old phone to your new phone then, be sure to delete the iCloud account off your new phone before you try to sync your new phone to iTunes.
I used the 2nd solution to solve my syncing issues. Everything works great now. iTunes recognized my new phone and can now sync/back-up data with out problems, error messages or loss of data.
Hope this helps everyone out! I intend to get drunk to relieve all the stress and hopefully restore my sanity as a result of having to solve this problem while having to act as my own Apple support staff!
