Q: Need advice and clarification on Extreme & Express setup

I currently own one of the orginal base station extreme with 'N' network capabilities that came out back in 2007.  It still works flawlessly to this date, but recently we moved to a bigger house with a bigger backyard. Now the base station is falling short in range, I was having too many blackout spots all over the house. My wife pulled the trigger and decided to get an AMPED Wireless Range Extender. The problem with this is that the manufacture failed to mention that the range extender actually creates a separate wifi network! so I ended up with two diffrent wifi network and it is left up to the device to detect which network has the strongest signal to connect to. THIS DOES NOT WORK FOR ME!  80 % of the time I have to switch network manually because my ipad and iphone don't seem to know the diffrence between the strongest network.

So here is my question. If I was to get one of the new Airport Extreme towers and extend it with a Airport express, will I get them both to merge on just one Wifi network? is this possible with apple wifi products. would I be able to use my old base station as and extender as well and increase the the network range. thank you in advance.

AirPort Extreme 802.11n (1st Gen), iOS 7.0.2

Yes, to all your questions here.. Extend wireless has to be the same wireless. Same SSID, same channel. .same everything.

And the old AE if it still works will work as extend wireless. Only single band though.. that was limitation of AE up to Gen3 product.
