Did you check your iCloud storage to see if you have exceeded your available storage? If so, your email account will be suspended (along with documents and data syncing and iCloud backups) until you have adequate storage again.

I did check and I was no where near my allocation.
I checked other sources on line and saw that a suggestion from Apple Tech Support to a similar problems last year was simeply to Shutdown and Reboot my Mac. That seemed to work. I don't know why I didn't think of that before as it is SOP for my Windows machines. I just always think of the Mac as being something more stable.
Bottom line: First try should be to reboot. Then, if that doesn't work look for a more sophisticated solution.
