I'm trying to determine if a fire wire 800 is interchangeable with a fire wire (IEEE 1394a) 6 pin cable.

Well yes and no, they are totally different connections. However you can get a FW400 to FW800 adapter. For example this FW400 to FW800 adapter

There's an adapter for everything! : ) What about data quality? Is there any significant loss when using an adapter like this? My interest is for video transfer and the unit I'm looking to use with my iMac only comes iwth a 6-pin Fire Wire. Just trying to weigh all my options. Thanks!
There will be no loss of data quality unless you were to happen to get a defective adapter, in which case it probably just wouldn't work at all. You will of course get only FW 400 performance.
