Keynote not saving properly

I seem to have just lost hours of work and I don't know why. It seems that by default, it was saving my project to icloud rather than my computer and when i tried to save it to my computer, that file was corrupted and completely empty. Really annoying because the icloud version was a much earlier version, before I had done lots of work. So what the heck is going on? Why doesn't Keynote save a document where I want it to in the first place? It doesn't even have a Save As command by default. When I used it by holding the Option key, that file didn't save properly. I have now moved it do my computer by using the Move To option, but this is just infuriating. Any hints about why this has happened and how to avoid it in the future?
