clipping sound on new iMac when Logix X is running

I just got the new iMac that was released two weeks ago yesterday. All I did was set it up with Logic X, Main Stage, and Aperture all from the app store. nothing else was put on it. I opened up logic just to check it out and see how much faster the performance would be. I just wanted to give it a quick test and played some apple loops I immideatly noticed it was making a clipping sound randomly. The meters were not peaking everything was in the green and if you turned down the gain the clipping just got quiteter. I called apple support thinking it was a hardware issue. They had me do some trouble shooting like playing the same loops through quicktime and the clipping persisted. they also had me play a youtube video to see if I could hear the clipping. It wasn't as noticible but it was there. Apple decided that it would be a good idea to reformat the computer tomorrow and start over. Sounded fine to me seeing how I didn't have much installed yet. I did a little more trouble shooting on my own after I got off the phone with apple. First I made a copy of three apple loops and put them on my desktop then restarted the computer. Then after a fresh restart and nothing running I opened one of the apple loops off the desktop with quicktime player and it sounded great no clipping. Same with You Tube. I then opened Logic Pro X. Did nothing with it but minimize it. I then went back to quick time player and tried to play the loop again. This time the clipping was back. Same with You Tube.

My conclusion for some reason when logic is running the audio makes a random clipping sound no matter what audio program you play the audio through. (Clipping sound comes out of the internal speakers as well as headphones)

All of my software is up to date.

I am running:

27" iMac

3.5GHz Intel Core i7

16 GB 1600 MHz DDR3

If anybody has experienced this same problem or has any recomendations they would be greatly appreciated.

I am going to reformat in the morning and try and start again.

I will post my results

Thank you,

Aaron

tinman,

Okay, what you are describing seems like the FD issue.... in which case, Apogee are correct.. there is nothing they can do.

Temp Workarounds for the Fusion Drive issue.... which affects all types of Audio Interfaces (FW and USB) as well as Internal Audio...

Either..

1) Create a bootable OS X external Disk, Boot from that and then install Logic on it.... and use that for Logic/Any Audio work..for the time being.. until a fix is released by Apple for this issue. Make sure you do not access any data on the FD drive after booting from the external drive otherwise the issue will reappear. until you restart your Mac and reboot from the EXT drive.. You can however, boot from the FD when not doing Audio related work.

2) Split your Fusion drive into an SSD and a Mech drive (again for the time being) and then reassemble the FD after the fix has been issued.

3) Return your iMac for one with an SSD or mech drive inside (if you still can..)

4) Do nothing and wait until Apple releases a fix for the problem... though there is no official ETA for any such fix...

Additional: Any USB2 Interface connected to a USB3 port may also have issues due to the USB2 > USB3 problem with newer Macs.. This issue requires updates from the Manufacturer of the Interface to fix the problem..

What OS X version are you running on your 2009 Mac Pro? Is it the same version as you are running on your iMac? I'm asking because some people have reported other issues with Apogee drivers and Mavericks... so if you are running Mav on both, that would be helpful to know...

Just out of curiosity, what's the best method for step 2?

I think it would be:

1. Use SuperDuper or CCC to clone the drive.

2. Boot off the cloned drive.

2. Erase and repartition the FD drive in Disk Utility. (But how do you differentiate the mech from the ssd? Right now, DU just shows one drive?).

3. CCC back to the mech partition and just ignore the SSD partition for now.

Is that the method? At this point I'm giving option 2 serious consideration. My only real concern is that I'll still have the USB issue behind it, but I suppose there's really only one way to find out. Booting off an external drive copy here hasn't worked, but I suspect that's because something is accessing the internal drive, and I'm not sure what that might be.

If the FW tbolt option doesn't work, I think that's my next step. It will not make me less bitter about this whole mess, though...😁

I am not in a position to try at the moment, but will likely do it some time next week if no fix magically appears. I would use superduper and clone the fusion drive to an external drive. Then use the instructions from Macworld to split the fusion drive. Using the scripts as described in the superduper manual, you can then clone only the system, library and apps and whatever will fit back onto the SSD partition. Then clone the whole thing back onto the HDD partition. You could then point iPhoto, iMovie, and iTunes/garage to the folders on the HDD partition. You could then run off the SSD or the HDD. Mail would be the main thing to be careful about if you go back and forth...if you organize your mail.

On the MacPro I have Mountain Lion (no problems), on the 2013 iMac I have Mavericks (came on the machine). For the 2013 iMac I have tried rebooting from a cloned external drive and neither the firewire Duet nor the USB Quartet worked - they both exhibited the dropped audio, distortion and other anomalies. I'd like to know before I split the Fusion Drive that I won't have an issue with the USB Quartet - Has anyone been successful with that configuration with Mavericks? I'm kinda gun shy because the booting off an external drive didn't work. Thanks!

Thanks Allan and AoS.

FYI, I've been working cases with Steinberg as well both through tech support and on their forums. I posted a link to this thread and a small quote from AoS as an update, and got this response from the very helpful Ed Doll, who's forum moderator on the hw forums:

NoelEiffe, thank you for the update from your end! The development team in Japan is testing this issue and we are also in contact with Apple on this.

We'll try everything we can from our side but it looks like Apple needs to address this as well

I think I'm going to bite the bullet this weekend and split the fusion drive if nothing better comes along. Thanks for the link to the Macworld piece. Doesn't look too hard to do, just a nuisance...

Cheers, Scott
