clipping sound on new iMac when Logix X is running

I just got the new iMac that was released two weeks ago yesterday. All I did was set it up with Logic X, Main Stage, and Aperture all from the app store. nothing else was put on it. I opened up logic just to check it out and see how much faster the performance would be. I just wanted to give it a quick test and played some apple loops I immideatly noticed it was making a clipping sound randomly. The meters were not peaking everything was in the green and if you turned down the gain the clipping just got quiteter. I called apple support thinking it was a hardware issue. They had me do some trouble shooting like playing the same loops through quicktime and the clipping persisted. they also had me play a youtube video to see if I could hear the clipping. It wasn't as noticible but it was there. Apple decided that it would be a good idea to reformat the computer tomorrow and start over. Sounded fine to me seeing how I didn't have much installed yet. I did a little more trouble shooting on my own after I got off the phone with apple. First I made a copy of three apple loops and put them on my desktop then restarted the computer. Then after a fresh restart and nothing running I opened one of the apple loops off the desktop with quicktime player and it sounded great no clipping. Same with You Tube. I then opened Logic Pro X. Did nothing with it but minimize it. I then went back to quick time player and tried to play the loop again. This time the clipping was back. Same with You Tube.

My conclusion for some reason when logic is running the audio makes a random clipping sound no matter what audio program you play the audio through. (Clipping sound comes out of the internal speakers as well as headphones)

All of my software is up to date.

I am running:

27" iMac

3.5GHz Intel Core i7

16 GB 1600 MHz DDR3

If anybody has experienced this same problem or has any recomendations they would be greatly appreciated.

I am going to reformat in the morning and try and start again.

I will post my results

Thank you,

Aaron

Hi Subterranean,

Sorry to hear about your troubles. I had the same computer as you except 16gb of ram instead of the 32 and I replaced it with Apple three times till I finally gave up and went for a 1TB SSD on the forth one and this one works great. I tried all the band-aids suggested. Booting of a external is the easiest to set up but my experience with it found it a little buggy (spontanious restarts and freezes).

I would highly suggest you at least replace your computer in the 14 day return policy. After that 14th day other poster on this thread seemed to get less attention from Apple.

Good luck,

So...another call to Apple Care...

Still no word on a fix from Apple and I have until 1/7 to exchange this Fusion Drive iMac for one without the FD. I'm reluctant to do this because I've invested so many hours in setting it up and downloading and installing software. And I feel like Apple will surely fix this problem.

If I don't return it by 1/7 then it will become a 'repair' issue if a general fix isn't forthcoming from Apple. And I have to drive 4 hours to an Apple store to do an exchange.

I'm inclined to just invest in an external drive and clone the system as a fix for now and hope that Apple will provide an system update that solves the problem.

I'm not all that knowledgable about Macs but from what I've read here, it is not all that tricky to clone the system to an external drive and boot off of that.

Is there any consensus about the best cloning software for this? Any tips on that and on the process are appreciated.

Thanks to all the posters on this board and especially to Art of Sound for all the good info.

Hi ges8ges...

I use SuperDuper! to clone my drives....

Also, it's very useful to make a full clone backup every so often and then restore from if something goes wrong ... and much quicker and effective that using TM for such situations i find.

Some people use Carbon Copy Cloner too...

which works well.. just not as well as SD! in my opinion...

and for now, the boot from a cloned ext HD method would seem like the best step to take....

Happy New Year!

When you clone from one drive to another it formats the ext drive making a perfect and identical image of the original drive....

You could partition the drive initially I suppose and then restore the clone to one of the partitions but performance drops when you do so..... so personally I always restore to an unpartitioned drive... so it's identical in content to the original even if not the same size...

You can then add other files to that external drive later if you wish... Just remember than when you go to restore back to the internal drive, you will clone the external drive which will then include all these extra files reducing the available space free on the internal drive... when you restore (If that makes sense?)

For such things I just use a domestic Seagate GoFlex... I grabbed a couple of FW 1TB ones in the past which I use with a FW to TBolt adaptor...but now, given you have a 2013 iMac... you could use USB3 ones too.... (I wouldn't recommend USB2 unless you absolutely have to)

Something like this if you are in the US...

or this for slightly better perfomance I found... for a 1 or 2TB...

Simon,

Yes.. from what I gather.. you just need to clone the entire Fusion Drive to a separate drive.. and then when this whole sorry mess is fixed, you can clone the external drive back to the Fusion Drive... as OS X and say.. SuperDuper! as the cloning app... see the Fusion Drive as just one drive like any other in that sense. It may take a little while for the Fusion drive, once you have cloned back to it.. to sort itself out and place the most accessed files back onto the SSD portion, but that process is automatic.. and as i said, just takes some time for the FD software to do
