Q: clipping sound on new iMac when Logix X is running

I just got the new iMac that was released two weeks ago yesterday.  All I did was set it up with Logic X, Main Stage, and Aperture all from the app store. nothing else was put on it.  I opened up logic just to check it out and see how much faster the performance would be.  I just wanted to give it a quick test and played some apple loops I immideatly noticed it was making a clipping sound randomly.  The meters were not peaking everything was in the green and if you turned down the gain the clipping just got quiteter.  I called apple support thinking it was a hardware issue.  They had me do some trouble shooting like playing the same loops through quicktime and the clipping persisted. they also had me play a youtube video to see if I could hear the clipping. It wasn't as noticible but it was there. Apple decided that it would be a good idea to reformat the computer tomorrow and start over.  Sounded fine to me seeing how I didn't have much installed yet.  I did a little more trouble shooting on my own after I got off the phone with apple. First I made a copy of three apple loops and put them on my desktop then restarted the computer. Then after a fresh restart and nothing running I opened one of the apple loops off the desktop with quicktime player and it sounded great no clipping. Same with You Tube. I then opened Logic Pro X. Did nothing with it but minimize it. I then went back to quick time player and tried to play the loop again. This time the clipping was back. Same with You Tube. 

My conclusion for some reason when logic is running the audio makes a random clipping sound no matter what audio program you play the audio through. (Clipping sound comes out of the internal speakers as well as headphones) 

All of my software is up to date.

 

I am running:

 

27" iMac

3.5GHz Intel Core i7

16 GB 1600 MHz DDR3

 

If anybody has experienced this same problem or has any recomendations they would be greatly appreciated.

I am going to reformat in the morning and try and start again.

I will post my results

    ...or hold down the option key on bootup and choose your startup disk....

    So... quick question for anyone who knows about booting from an external disk.

    I'm not too hot on this external / bootable drive stuff.

     

    Can I not just create a bootable disk from an 8GB usb stick and use that and leave logic pro x on the FD or would LPX HAVE to be an external drive with everything on it too?

    The aim of booting from an external HD is so that the Fusion Drive is not accessed at all. If you simply boot from an OS X stick and then access LPX etc... on the FD... then the FD would continue to be used.. hence the problem with that idea...

     

    So, the answer is no.. You should create an entirely new system disk with everything you need to use on it and not use the FD at all.

     

    Note: The 'stick' method or any of the other variants that needed to access the FD for other programs/data etc... were tested and did not work.... for the reasons given above.

    Ahhh... I see.

     

    So if I was to make a new "Macintosh HD" on my thunderbolt drive from a Time Machine backup then I'm bypassing the whole Fusion Drive system, right? Which is the workaround until an official fix comes out.

     

    I get it. Doh moment. Hahahaha. Sorry been a crazy weekend and on downtime brain wise! Haha.

    I actually use a Clone program such as Carbon Copy Cloner or my personal favorite SuperDuper! to clone the current system drive on the the Ext drive because i don't trust Time machine for such things but yes, thats the same basic idea

    I like the idea of the workaround because it seems to be producing great results, and I don't want to sound cynical in asking this, but do you guys think Apple will actually fix this?

     

    Because I don't want to waste money spent upgrading to a FD plus that spent on an ext HD. I'd rather swap my computer out for one sans FD.

     

    What do you guys think?

    Frankly I believe Apple will resolve the issue because it is in their best interests to do so but....

     

    ..and as just a personal opinion....

     

    I truly don't think a Fusion Drive is something I would purchase irrespective of this issue or not

     

    I might be pursuaded to buy a real SSD as my System Drive though the Cost to GB ratio compared to a fast 7200rpm HD connected internally to the ATA serial bus.. is still a little 'rich' for me.. and I'd want a fairly large sized one.. Certainly no less than 500GB... so that ups the cost... but the Fusion Drive, to me, is more a kind of halfway house doesn't warrant it's extra cost... and places a load upon the CPU that outweighs any benefits it brings to drive performance, due to the way it works..  To me its not much more than a glorified Extra Large Cache..... with some 'clever' software running/managing things..

     

    So, I would stick to either a good sized SSD as my system drive.. if money wasn't of concern... or stick to the fast internal 7200rpm Mech HD and spend the extra money on a good Glyph External FW800 HD or two.. for my Audio work...

    In Audio-MIDI setup set the Mic as the Input  set the Format to 48,000 hz   16-bit.

     

    After that's done go to Logic and set the Input to Mic or Built-In (whichever one appears) Outout to Built-In.

     

    Do you still get the noise?

    Ok.. Update.

     

    I have restored my iMac using Time Machine. Made sure it was backed up before hand.

    I have split my thunderbolt drive and called 1TB of it Mac HD. I have reinstalled onto there and am now running off there 100% bypassing the fusion.

     

    First of all. SUCESS!!!!!!

     

    I have been playing ALL my Logic Pro X sessions for over an hour now and no pops, no clicks, no ANYTHING out of the ordinary running completely off the External Thunderbolt drive.

     

    Secondly, The only difference i see in speed is when you switch the iMac on it is about 1/3 slower to get running but considering it only took 20 seconds to boot up anyways, who cares?!?!

     

    Thirdly, SUCESS with the internal audio. I NEVER had pops or clicks internally but couldnt route the audio through the saffire without the issue of complete cut out occuring. but now it works flawlessly.

     

    Main thing is that this cloning the drive and running external works for now and more importantly i can record (which I have tested and no issue what so ever!)

     

    Once Apple deal with out a fix (which will be tomorrow knowing my luck! hahaha) I will switch it back.. but for now my Saffire Pro 14 is running as smooth as you like with Saffire Mix Control software.

     

    One happy JP.. for now! haha
