Q: clipping sound on new iMac when Logix X is running

I just got the new iMac that was released two weeks ago yesterday.  All I did was set it up with Logic X, Main Stage, and Aperture all from the app store. nothing else was put on it.  I opened up logic just to check it out and see how much faster the performance would be.  I just wanted to give it a quick test and played some apple loops I immideatly noticed it was making a clipping sound randomly.  The meters were not peaking everything was in the green and if you turned down the gain the clipping just got quiteter.  I called apple support thinking it was a hardware issue.  They had me do some trouble shooting like playing the same loops through quicktime and the clipping persisted. they also had me play a youtube video to see if I could hear the clipping. It wasn't as noticible but it was there. Apple decided that it would be a good idea to reformat the computer tomorrow and start over.  Sounded fine to me seeing how I didn't have much installed yet.  I did a little more trouble shooting on my own after I got off the phone with apple. First I made a copy of three apple loops and put them on my desktop then restarted the computer. Then after a fresh restart and nothing running I opened one of the apple loops off the desktop with quicktime player and it sounded great no clipping. Same with You Tube. I then opened Logic Pro X. Did nothing with it but minimize it. I then went back to quick time player and tried to play the loop again. This time the clipping was back. Same with You Tube.

My conclusion for some reason when logic is running the audio makes a random clipping sound no matter what audio program you play the audio through. (Clipping sound comes out of the internal speakers as well as headphones)

All of my software is up to date.

I am running:

27" iMac

3.5GHz Intel Core i7

16 GB 1600 MHz DDR3

If anybody has experienced this same problem or has any recomendations they would be greatly appreciated.

I am going to reformat in the morning and try and start again.

I will post my results

Thank you,

Aaron

I am in the same Boat as you guys. I also just bought the sparkling new imac icore7 "3TB Fusion Drive".

I am running logic 10 and mavericks.

My trusty old motu 896HD is dropping out after only a few minutes every time i use it so it forced me to rush out and buy a apogee Quartet which sounds great when i'm not trying to record anything.

All i get is a crackling distortion noise.

So i decided to google this issue and here i am.

Come on apple please fix this quick before our NEW Imacs become old before they even work !!!

Lucky for me I still have my motu hooked up to my old imac and i can keep my recording studio open for business.

These fusion drives are a great idea but they just dont work, YET!!!

I've been married to apple for 20 years, don't drop the ball now.

    Hi everyone!

I've just purchased an iMac 21.5" with 16gb RAM and a Fusion Drive for music production in Logic Pro X.

I'm guessing that was a mistake after reading everything in this thread..

I have the same problem as some of you here, distortion, crackles, pops and a weird high pitched, bit crushing like effect when I try to record audio (and sometimes during playback in Logic).

The problem is fixed for a couple of minutes when I change my buffer size and Logic initializes the core audio but is back again after a couple of minutes.

Is there an update coming from Apple (is it something they can fix with an update?) or should I just send the whole thing back and buy something else?

    What do you think?

    Thanks in advance!

Apparently, depending on who you get when you call Applecare, they are working on a fix. I was told that they were aware and working on it when I called last week. Others have been told that Apple was not aware of it. It is very frustrating because you can't really tell when it is going to start and or how long it will last. It usually seems that booting from an External drive will prevent it from happening..... but that it not a fix.

Just a note that you should still call Applecare and register it as a problem

I spoke to Tech Support today and made them aware of my situation..

I've sent the Tech Guy an audio test, a test project and a system repport.

After reading everything here I don't think it will make any difference though.

If anyone hears or knows anything about what seems to be going on with the update please let me know!

    UPDATE:

Received replacement iMac 2013 with 3TB non-fusion drive and setup this weekend.  Audio problem is gone.

I'm using an Apogee Duet Firewire.

I just buy iMac 2013 with 256 Go SSD (it's the second, the first was with 1 TB Fusion Drive and didn't work).

I will tell you how it works with Apogee Duet Firewire. I really hope the answer is : "perfectly" !!!

Has anybody had any success with using a usb audio interface on a non fusion drive imac through a thunderbolt hub?

That seems to be an option with something like a caldigit thunderbolt hub provided that there is some proven success.

Eventually, I feel there will be a fix but," when", is the issue... I know some had success using the thunderbolt to

firewire adapter with their firewire interfaces. Any feedback is greatly appreciated.

I'm not convinced that will help. I'm using a Focusrite Saffire Pro 24, Firewire to Thunderbolt adapter and having the same issue. USB isn't the problem that I am aware of.

    Philoking,

That is because there are two different issues... with two different causes.. and some people can be affected by both issues at the same time..

One is regarding the FD drive in 2013 iMacs... which affects all types of Audio Interfaces as well as internal Audio..

....and one regarding the use of USB2 interfaces via USB3 ports in certain OS X /Hardware configurations.......

The fix Beefus is posting about, is to help fix the USB2 Intertace in USB3 ports issue...

Ah, ok. Maybe a good time for a moderator to split these threads since they are two similar but not related issues?

Yes..I agree but unfortunately that would be a huge job given the length of this thread now... and we, the users, don't have any real contact with the moderators..... other than being able to report posts here and there... if you have reached a certain level.

On top of that, the Mods tend not to be knowledgeable about the subject matter here..  so they would probably make more mistakes in splitting the thread and putting some posts in the wrong threads... that would would cause even more confusion.....

    Good idea though!

I would like to add my experience to this painful expereinece. I have a fresh IMac out of the box with SSD Drive and I cant use my Audio Kontrol 1 card I get crackles like pops and sound skips and distortion. I have tried all the trouble shooting I could. Native instruments said their driver is fine and kept saying turn off the power nap. . while apple think there is nothing wrong ??????

Caught between bothI bought the whole system for making audio to find out that external sound cards dont work on new Imacs !!!!!!! I am so fustrated right now and not sure where to take this from here

I have been informed that the engineering department are aware of, and work on, the issue... however no idea when a fix will be made... which is frustrating.

    Hi Organik76,

The Audio Kontrol 1 card is USB2 correct?  Have you tried plugging it into a USB2 powered hub first before plugging the hub into the computer.  Others have reported that as a work around for USB2 problems. If I recall correctly you are only able to plug one device into the hub for it to work. You could probably pick up a hub for less than ten bucks these days or may even have one in the closet.  Give it a try. Please report back if it works for you.

    Good Luck,

    DeadPhish
