Server admin has hung in Calendar and the forums are full of tales of woe.  I don't need it (just updated the OS and got lumbered with it),and it does not appear in Applications.  This meeans I have to protect my Cloud files by disabling iCloud on the Macbook but maintain it on the iPhone and iPad, until I get a solution

If Server Admin.app for 10.6 isn't showing the iCal Calendar Server, then it's not configured and not running on your OS X Server 10.6 system.  If there's a line for iCal but the ball isn't green, it's configured within Server Admin.app, but is not running.  If you do have iCal visible, then shut it off and (if there's a problem with that) ensure it's shut off and try a reboot.

Far and away the most common issue with OS X Server and weird behavior is bad local DNS configuration; ISP DNS and Google DNS aren't sufficient, and the OS X Server box (or something else on the local network) needs to be running DNS services.
