mac mini hdmi>dvi>VAG connection problem.
It looks very similar, but doesn't fit a standard VGA cable? Do I need an adapter?

The Mini's HDMI output is only digital. The is no simple HDMI to VGA since VGA is analogue.
What other output do you have on the Mini? If a mini display port or Thunderbolt, just get a mini-display port to VGA adopter. That plugs into the Thunderbolt port too.
Ah, so I wouldn't need that monstrous VGA cable at all? it does have a thunderbolt port.
What video-in connections connections are on the monitor?
There are 2 hdmi ports + the old VAG multi pin RGB out types. Mac Mini has 1 hdmi port + 1 Thunderbold port.
If the monitor has HDMI port(s) then just get an HDMI to HDMI cable.
Optionally you can also use a VGA connected monitor, but you will need a MiniDisplay Port to VGA Adapter connected up to the Thunderbolt port.
