iMessages on 1st Gen iPad

I have a first generation iPad running iOS 5.1.1. I would like to receive iMessages sent to my phone number on my iPad, but I don't seem to be able to add a phone number to the iMessaging settings. The Apple Store tech tells me that iOS 5.1.1 does not support receiving iMessages sent to a phone number, but sometimes iMessages sent to my phone appear on my iPad. Is it correct that iOS 5.1.1 does not support iMessaging sent to a phone number? Then why do I get them sometimes?

iMessage requires iOS 6 or later > iOS: Using Messages

iOS 5.1.1 is as far as the fist generation iPad can be updated.

Thanks, but why then do I sometimes receive iMessages that were sent to my phone number on my iPad?

Yes, to receive at a phone number you must have iOS 6 or higher. Since you are running iOS 5, you can send to a phone number, but you cannot receive at your phone number. You can receive at your iCloud email address (or any other email address you've associated with iMessage as far as I know).

My problem is that I can't ever activate imessage: it starts an authentication loop without notificate a credential error. The AppleID used is valid (I configured iCloud).
