I am using a Windows XP laptop and have nothing loaded for Apple support, (yet). I do not use Outlook, but rather Lotus Notes.
I have the contacts in my phone but simply want to assign them to groups as I have over 600 already and that will at least double in the coming weeks.
If possible I want to do it all through the phone and not involve the laptop.

The best way to do this would be to have your iPhone's contacts stored on iCloud, then you can go to iCloud.com from any computer and create groups according to the instructions in this article:

The Contacts app on the iPhone or iPad des not support creating groups. It will see the groups but those groups must be created on a computer. Take a good look at Branden85's suggestions.
