Q: Sound works fine, but headphone controls no longer work? IOS7 Iphone5

Pretty much what the subject says, this just started happening today, i've had the same pair of headphones for 10 months, with no issues.  But again, the sound still works fine in both ears, so it seems odd that the controls would suddenly stop working... Any insights?

iPhone 5, also ipod classic video (30gb)

First try with traditional toothpick extracted small wad of lint, then tried one of those plastic toothpicks with the brushlike thing on one end. This one removed four times more lint. Now the remote controls are working flawlessly again.

Awesome! This worked perfectly for me (cleaning the audio jack, I used a clip). Now the controls are back both in music and calls! Thanks!

Worked for me too! I did clean the jack before using pressurized air and alcohol on a cotton bud but neither worked. Use a toothpick! Put it in and press the tip against the bottom by the wall. Then keep pressing against the wall and bring it out. Repeat a number of times from all possible angles (in my case first 10 or so attempts pulled no lint out).

Also to check if this is the case for you check if the headphone plug enters the jack in full. You should have the white plastic touching the phone once inserted. If you have even the smallest gap - it's lint. I was missing about 2-3 mm. After the cleaning it goes all the way in till the end with no feeling of pressure. The feeling of pressure when inserting the plug is also a sign of lint - it should slide in with no pressure.

Well, I have to say I was as skeptical as many others, being sure it must be the result of an iOS update gone bad. Nope, I rolled a tiny piece of paper, inserted and rotated, and gave it a puff as well. When I tried inserting the jack again, it did indeed, slip right in and was tight. And, all functionality was restored. Volume up/down, pause/play/jump to next...All good.
