finder file rename selection problem

Anyone having troubles selecting files in the finder of OS X version 10.8.5 for renaming. The troubles seem to occur when there are over about 15 files viewable in the Finder window and I have already made several file name changes. The trouble is that Finder will get into a mode where a completely different file in the directory will get selected (several files above or below) from the one being clicked on.

In detail: I click to select the file, click again in a slightly different location on the file name to allow me to select a position in the filename to place the cursor to edit. then I select that position with a click. But at that moment a completely different file in the finder window is selected 10 to 15 files away (above or below), causing me to repeat the process on the original file. The second time I perform this process on the same exact file it will work. This causes me to repeat the three click process twice for each file I want to rename. Its quite annoying... The same problem occurs when I use a combination of clicking and cursor control to rename the files. I don't use the pulldown menu item to rename or the shortcut key to rename, so I don't know if the problem also occurs in those processes. I does not appear to be a hardware problem since it occurs on both my generation 1 MacBook Air and newest MacBook Air as well as my Mac Pro.

A similar issue occurred with previous version of OS X when you rename a file causing the finder to reorder the files in the window. If you clicked on another file for rename before finder re-ordered the files, I would lose the selection on the next file when Finder did finally re-order the files. My work around was to click away from the file I just renamed, wait for the files to be reordered, and then proceed to the next file for renaming.

In any case, renaming a series of files in a finder window requires a lot of extra clicking and selecting to overcome these issues.
