software update not working properly

On my Mac mini server running 10.8.5, I have the option set to "Download newly available updates in the background", but this never seems to be working. I'm alerted that updates are available through notification center, but I still have to download all system and software updates manually. Anyone with any

Mac mini, OS X Server, OS X 10.8.5, 2GHz i7, 4 GB RAM

Seems like a bug; maybe Server.app and its services are getting tangled with the functions of OS X client?


Do you have the caching server and software update server running?


Anything relevant to these two servers or to the update-related processing in the logs? (Applications > Utilities > Console.app can show more data than Server.app usually does, too.)
