Why can't I find the most recent response?

I get an email notification of a new response to a discussion I'm following, go to the discussion, it says on the top the last response was a couple hours ago, but it's nowhere to be found! I tried using the links in the email for both the message, and for the discussion topic, and they both bring me to either the first or last page, and there's no new response. Why is navigating around these discussions so helter skelter?
