What happens when you try?
Hi Terence,
I get error message: "The application .Capture NX Setup.pkg can not be opened, because the applications for platform PowerPC are not supprted anymore"
In the meantime I recieved today info from Nikon that Capture NX2 is still not compatible with system Macintosh OS X 10.8.5.
Before I return it back to the seller I wanted to know if someone had any tricks, how to instal it.
Martin
The error message indicates that Capture NX2 (or at least the installer) is a PowerPC application. PPC applications will run on Intel Macs provided your Mac has Rosetta support. Rosetta was available in Tiger & Leopard. With the release of Snow Leopard it was no longer installed by default, but still available as an option in OS X. It was discontinued completely with the release of Lion and is neither included or supported on Lion or Mt. Lion.
There may be some technical wizardry that might enable you to install NX2 on a Mt. Lion Mac but even if you do there is no guarantee it will run properly. Frankly I don't advise trying. And Nikon is notorious for not updating their software; Nikon only indicates NX2 suport on OS X 10.4.11 & 10.5.7, nothing later.
May I suggest that you look into Adobe Camera RAW, Aperture, CaptureOne Pro, or DxO Optics Pro ...
Thanks a lot for explanation. It seems I really have to go for something else, if I don`t want to wait ages for Nikon (which is hard for me as Nikon fan:). What would you recommend mostly?
As I said above, look into Adobe Camera RAW, Aperture, CaptureOne Pro, or DxO Optics Pro ... Camera Raw is probably the most frequently used since it comes with Photoshop and Lightroom.
You do know that this is only needed for advance processing of NEF files, right? If you are shooting JPEG you do not need a RAW converter.
What does Capture give you that you cannot do with iPhoto and Image Capture?
What does Capture give you that you cannot do with iPhoto and Image Capture?
NX2 and other RAW converters provide RAW image manipulation before further processing or editing. For photographers who use RAW (NEF in the Nikon world) this can be very important, as RAW files provide many benefits unavailable in JPEG or other formats including much wider dynamic range (exposure latitude & recovery), and a more expansive color gamut (among other things).
Image Capture does not provide RAW file manipulation. iPhoto has some basic RAW file capabilities (for a limited list of cameras) but it is nowhere near what NX2, Adobe Camera RAW and other mainstream RAW converters do.
