What is the ➕ button on the upper left hand corner of pages supposed to do?
Sometimes it maximizes the page, other times it only gets a little bit larger and it also make the page smaller. It appears random to me.
New to Mac.

I understand that it's supposed to maximize but it often only makes the window a bit larger. Is there a way of presenting it's function, so that it will always fully maximize to fill the screen?

The 3 buttons are close, minimize and zoom. The zoom button maximizes and restores according to your presets. Click on plus and drag the page out to a maximum you like, then click on plus again and it should return to normal size.
It won't go fullscreen, that's what the fullscreen feature is for at the top right.
Some applications have a fullscreen feature which is shown as a double arrow in the upper right like this:
Clicking that sends the window to full screen. To remove full screen, click the window again and find the two white arrows in a blue box in a similar shape to what I've shown.
