Use of Message Access Profile for customize communication & MFi Program needs

1) Can I use Bluetooth's Message Access Protocol (MAP) for customized communication between an iOS App & my own Bluetooth Accessory device?

In other words since MAP is part of the 7 profiles which don't require the need to sign-up for MFi program, can MAP profile be used for custom protocol based communication between an iOS App and custome bluetooth accessory device ?

2) Does signing-up to MFi program mean that one must use the MFi chip in my custom bluetooth accessory ? or is there is any option sign-up for MFi program and not use the any MFi chip in custom bluetooth accessory device and still interface with iOS devices without violating any Apple requirements ?
