Belkin Firewire hub not supporting usb optical drive

I got a Belkin Firewire 400 6 pin hub and was going to use the firewire 400 bus to power 3 external burners that are usb 2.0. When I plugged the hub into my computer I noticed that the external burner wasn't appearing and so from there I began to troubleshoot the problem and I found that the only way the external burner will work is if the hub is attached to my computer through usb and not firewire.

I really would like to get it to work via firewire because burning 3 dvds at a time on usb 2.0 might be a problem for me due to the transfer limit of 2.0.

So my question is is there a way around this? Do I need another hub or is there any other way to have 8 external burners running from one computer?

Thanks

Mac Pro, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.5)
