what do i need to do to get my mac to play more video types?

Q: how can i play more movie types on a mac if you do not support what i have?
Install Perian to play many different encodings within Quicktime Player.
Use VLC to play almost anything.
Perian is no longer being developed, but it still works.
Also, on that link to Perian, they offer some other players.
