Turn off automatic smiley feature in iMessage OS X?

Looking for advice on how to turn off the auto smiley (smilley, not emoji) feature in the iMessage OS X app.

iMessage in OS X automatically swaps out character groupings such as : ) for faux emojji: happy , laugh , etc.

The problem is that iOS does not swap out those character groupings. Specifically Japanese style emoticons

such as

!(◎_◎ : )

end up looking like

!(◎_◎😉

in iMessage OS X

Any advice appreciated.

Hi,

Mavericks' Messages 8 version has An Substitutions section in the Edit Menu

It appears the Emoji line may control the appearance or not of the Smiley alternatives.

Hi,

The Main Messages window where the Chats are has to be the Front window.

It is greyed out if you display Buddy Lists for instance and one of them is "Front" or another window such as the preferences is "Front"
