Q: Recovering lost iTunes downloads

What's frustrating is I can't even download it again from iTunes.  When I try, it only says "play" because I already purchased it.  When I play, it says "Unable to locate file."I

    If it shows in the Purchased link under Quicklinks on the right-hand side of the iTunes store home page but has 'downloaded' against it instead of the cloud symbol for redownloading, then try deleting it from the Music part of your library (where you would click on it to play it) and it should then get the cloud symbol - iTunes is seeing that entry in your library and assuming that you still have the music file somewhere
