I have used the Kaspersky removal tool to uninstall the AV program. I emptied the trash and checked for kaspersky. I also deleted the com.kaspersky files. kav keeps reappearing as a process, onwed by root. Any suggestions on how to permanently remove this?

You need to contact their support if it won't completely uninstall. You can try a third party apps such as AppCleaner, you can find it at www.macupdate.com
Remove "Kaspersky Security" by following the instructions on this page. If you have a different version of the product, the procedure may be different.
Do not use any application that purports to remove other software.
Back up all data before making any changes.
