iPod classic
Thanks, but it won't reset. Only goes right back to the red X and circle. I can't restore because it won't go into disk mode, and itunes won't recognize it. I've tried different USB cables and do have the lates version of itunes. Hardware issue?
If you can't get it into disk mode the hard drive has probably had it. See Corrupt iPod classic on the offchance that you can get into diagnostics mode.

Almost certainly.
Although the technical details are incorrect (the iPod has no "lens" or "needle"), user munoz4415 describes a technique - an act of desperation - that you may find worth considering before giving up on your iPod and disposing of it:
Dropped iPod. Red "X" on reset. Tried everything. Anything else I can do?
To fix it properly is likely to require replacing its hard disk. If you're interested in that consider using iFixit's detailed instructions:

There is a hard drive issue. most likely you have nocked the needle of the hard drive. i found this blog that saved my ipod and i didnt need to buy a new one.
